Some Quick Notes on the doTERRA Home Essential Kit

The Home Essentials Kit from doTERRA is the kit I started with when I started using their essential oils.

My friend suggested a couple of other ones, like Marjoram and Balance, so I added those. I was a little bit intimidated when I placed the order, as there were several oils that I had no idea what to do with. They smelled lovely, but I didn’t really expect to use them.

I have never much cared for the smell of melaleuca, so I missed the teetree craze (melaleuca), when it hit in the 80’s. I have never really used it in my first aid kit. I use it often now, and I don’t mind the smell of doTERRA’s preparation. Marjoram, an oil I had no idea what to do with, is now an oil I use often. I now have a relationship with every oil that originally intimidated me.

It wasn’t long before my life and my family’s lives provided reasons to whip out an oil. The beautiful thing is that they are extremely supportive, and every time I try something new I am inspired by what I find.

I have put together some short notes on just a few of the ways I have tried the oils in doTERRA’s Home Essentials Kit. I have all kinds of experiences with them–I want to keep them all in one place, so why not share them?  My experience is growing and I hope you find more ways to grow with what doTERRA has to offer.

Please come back and share your essential oil experiences with me. The comments are open baby!

Lavender: A soothing and relaxing experience

  • This oil is from France
  • I use lavender to relieve stress, anxiety and insomnia
  • Lavender and marjoram are wonderful together at the onset of a muscle spasm. I have taken to enhancing my Aroma Touch blend with extra Lavender and Marjoram for a harder punch.
  • I use it aromatically (mist, diffuse or inhale), massage it onto the skin
  • I had heard it was good for burns, and applied it directly to a burn and felt immediate relief. The skin healed beautifully with continual application
  • I use it to sooth skin irritations.

Lemon: For Cleansing and Mood Elevation

  • This oil is from Italy
  • Lemon in known to be a natural detoxifying antioxidant
  • Lovely in a cocktail, especially if you enjoy your martini extra dry
  • I use it to scent my cleansing agent and it is known to be a stain remover.
  • It elevates my mood
  • I mix a drop of Lemon with a drop of Bergamot and Fractionated Coconut Oil has replaced deodorant in my medicine cabinet.

Frankincense: For just about Everything!

  • This oil is from Oman
  • In an effort to reduce inflammation we apply Frankincense directly on location.
  • Frankincense is known to support immune function – we massage it on the feet and ears.
  • To enhance the work of some other oils, I use Frankincense.
  • When combined with Serenity Blend, we find that soothing deep sleep is experienced.
  • When healing skin irritations, scars and wounds, I include Frankincense.
  • To soothe a persistent dry cough, I rub Frankincense on to the throat, stroking lengthwise. We love Frankincense in our family.
  • There is a reason the Wise Men anointed Jesus with Frankincense when he was born.

Peppermint: For Indigestion and Cooling

  • This oil is from Washington, USA
  • Headache support– apply on temples, forehead, or back of neck
  • Calm a upset stomach by applying to the stomach and breathing aromatically
  • Wonderful coolant in the summer. I keep a spray bottle with peppermint and water in my car––roll down the windows and it works better than the air conditioner on hot days!
  • We use peppermint and lavender together in a spray bottle, it works wonders on sunburn.
  • We also add a drop to a pot of cocoa in winter

Melaleuca: Sooths Skin

  • This oil is from Australia
  • I use it in times one may consider antibiotic ointment applied on location––diluted or neat as necessary.
  • I have a very effective anti fungal blend for skin irritations like athlete’s foot, in which I have included melaleuca, basil, clary sage and rosemary. It worked very well on a friend who had tried everything.
  • It is known to be a natural cleansing agent and stain remover.

Oregano: Immune Support

  • This oil is from Turkey
  • Oregano does so much for the immune system in our house. We apply it to bottom of feet as it is very potent. Dilute when using on children.
  • When that nasty stomach flu passed through our house, a friend suggested oregano on the feet with some massage. My son was the only one left by the time I got the tip, but he passed through it with the oregano protocol and DigestZen faster than the rest of us who only used the DigestZen. (We all drank Kuzu dissolved in water as well).
  • I felt a cold coming on last night and after the first sneeze and shiver, I immediately rubbed my feet with Oregano and Rosemary. Then I put on a pair of damp cotton socks and followed with a pair of wool socks on top. I went to sleep. In the morning, I was glad I did!

Deep Blue: Soothing Muscles and Joints

(Wintergreen, camphor, peppermint, blue tansy, blue chamomile, helichrysum and osmanthus)

  • in times of muscle and joint pain, we apply on Deep Blue directly upon the location.
  • Contains blue tansy and helichrysum, which can help support long -term muscle joint and bone es when healing.
  • Apply before and after working out
  • Similarly to PastTense we have found Deep Blue to be supportive during allergy season.
  • We used The Deep Blue Rub all winter long–our muscles love it!

Breathe: Respiratory Blend (laurel leaf, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree, lemon and ravensara)

  • Oil Blend – Eucalyptus, Laurel leaf, Lemon, Melaleuca, Peppermint, Ravensara
  • I diffuse Breathe when my family is suffering from respiratory discomfort.
  • I use it during allergy season, we apply to the chest area, and have found it to assist the body in clearing congestion from the lungs and sinuses.
  • During winter colds, we apply Breathe to the chest and sinuses (diluted in a clean carrier oil) in times others might use Vics vapo rub, or my mom might have used tiger balm when I was a kid.

DigestZen: Digestive blend (Ginger, peppermint, tarragon, fennel, caraway, coriander and anis)

DigestZen is one of my favorites!! This is one of the few oils I personally ingest in small doses. I put one drop in a quart of water. If I accidentally drop too much, I dilute accordingly. The instructions may be to use a drop or two in a glass of water, but with essential oil ingestion I am ALWAYS inclined to assume that less is more.

  • Oil Blend – Anise, Caraway, Coriander. Fennel. Ginger. Peppermint, Tarragon
  • I have found it to relieve digestive discomfort from things like, over indulgence like Thanksgiving dinner, acid reflux, nausea, constipation or diarrhea – rub a few drops on the abdomen, breathe the scent, diffuse, and bottom of the feet. Dilute with fractionated coconut, or some other clean carrier oil for use on children.
  • I have found that this blend seems to know the difference between constipation and diarrhea!

On Guard Protective Oil Blend – Cinnamon, Clove bud, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Wild Orange

  • supportive when combatting the the growth of viruses and bacteria.
  • I use small antique doilies; I never knew what to do with, as dryer sheets. On Guard freshens the laundry, and it comes out smelling fresh and clean.
  • All of the oils in this blend have been used in immune defense for centuries.

Past Tense:  A Tension Blend
(wintergreen, lavender, peppermint, frankincense, cilantro, marjoram, roman chamomile, basil, and rosemary)

  • Oil Blend – Basil, Cilantro. Frankincense, Lavender, Marjoram, Peppermint, Roman Chamomile, Rosemary and Wintergreen
  • A tiny dab is supportive on the back of my temples (you don’t want it in your eyes), and on both sided of the back of my neck in the soft spots where my neck meets my skull.
  • I breathe it in times of mental stress.
  • We have found PastTense to support the sinuses during allergy season while aiming to soothe a sinus headache.
  • Breathe has been known to relax muscles during times of clenching and spasm.

***NOTE: With the growing use of essential oils, many people are using them internally. I caution everyone, who chooses to do so, to proceed down that road with extreme caution. With essential oil ingestion (and any early general experimentation with essential oils) I am ALWAYS inclined to assume that less is more. Because I can only speak about my own experiences, and my experience with ingesting essential oils is minimal, so will the information I share about ingestion. If I happen to experience particular results with ingesting an oil, I will share it.

I would love to hear more about your experiences with ingesting them.

Since I am NOT a medical practitioner, and my experiences are all I can offer, please be sure to remember that your own healthcare practitioner should be your source for medical diagnosis, and the healthcare decisions you make for you and your family should be made from an educated and informed understanding of what you are doing. In simple terms––if you are sick, go to a doctor.
